GS Biotech S/B is a new ‘spin-off’ Malaysian biotechnology company specializing in the production of yeast β-glucans for the livestock and aquaculture industry. We are based in the city of Tawau in the East Malaysian state of Sabah. Although the aquaculture industry has been using β-glucans for years, these are mainly in spray-dried form and are harvested during the exponential phase of the growth of yeast cultures. Although these are very effective in stimulating the prophenoloxidase or PPO cascade in penaeid shrimp, there has not been any account of β-glucans being used to allow cultured shrimp in pond conditions to survive an aggressive WSSV (white spot syndrome virus) outbreak without accompanying mortality observed. In December 2008 in the midst of a particularly virulent WSSV outbreak in Tawau, we conducted field trials proving that our liquid ‘Beta-Defense’ was effective in allowing all 25 treated ponds to continue until harvest size despite being WSSV-infected without accompanying mortality. In contrast, hundreds of shrimp ponds were affected and had to undergo ‘emergency harvesting’ due to accompanying mortality observed.
